10 Detroit Schools to Consider for Your Education
If you’re thinking about pursuing a higher education in Detroit, Michigan has some of the best schools in the country. However, higher education doesn’t come cheap. Tuition runs thousands of dollars a year in some cases and for most people this means taking out a student loan.
Let’s take a look at some of colleges in Michigan and their price points.
1. Marygrove College – Tuition: $16,800 per year. Room/Board: $7,600 per year. This forward thinking Catholic liberal arts college features 31 major areas of study and 16 certificate programs. Total enrollment is just under 6,000 students, including adult, graduate, and long distance learners.
2. Wayne State University – Tuition: resident $263 per credit hour, non-resident $603 per credit hour. Room/Board: $7,660 per year. WSU offers over 350 degree programs to their student population. They also have over 200 student organizations, a diverse student population, and the ability to start studying towards a graduate degree as an undergraduate.
3. University of Michigan – Tuition: resident $11,837 per year, non-resident $36,001 per year. Room/Board: $9,192 per year. UM’s main campus is located less than an hour to the west of Detroit. It also features two other branch campuses. Total enrollment is over 58,000 students. Some famous graduates include James Earl Jones, Lucy Liu, Tom Brady, and Google founder Larry Page.
4. Eastern Michigan University – Tuition: resident $8,376 per year, non-resident $22,282 per year. Room/Board: $7,786 per year. EMU has over 22,000 students who study 200 different programs at five different undergraduate colleges and the school’s other facilities. It also features seven off campus locations, including one in Detroit.
5. Madonna University – Tuition: $458 per credit hour. Room/Board: $7,120 per year. MU is the most affordable independent liberal arts college in Michigan. not only that, but this catholic university, founded in 1947, offers both bachelor and masters programs. They have seven different educational colleges and offer many different areas of study for their students to concentrate in.
6. Schoolcraft College – Tuition: resident $80 per credit hour, non-resident $118 per credit hour. Schoolcraft offers over 90 programs of study ending in a certificate, associates degree, or a transfer degree to earn your bachelors degree. This school provides a cheaper option, letting you complete your first two years of school at a much lower price tag.
7. Baker College – Tuition: $195 per quarter hour of credit. Room/Board: $1,205 per person per quarter. Baker is the largest independent college in Michigan and it serves over 43,000 students worldwide. They offer over 140 career programs and have a 97% employment rate. With fourteen locations throughout Michigan, Detroit residents have several campuses to choose from.
8. University of Windsor – Tuition: around $18,000 per year for international students. Room/Board: $8,576 per year. If you are interested in studying out-of-state, you might consider a Canadian university like this one. Directly across the border, Windsor offers its services to over 16,000 full-time students. They offer over 150 academic programs.
9. Walsh College – Tuition: $320 per credit hour. This independent institution offers classes at several different locations. They offer undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs.
10. Macomb Community College – Tuition: in-county $80 per credit hour, resident $122 per credit hour, non-resident $159 per credit hour. This center serves over 5,000 students. They offer pre-college programs, professional education programs, customized workforce training, and many cultural and enrichment programs. They are the largest granters of associate degrees in Michigan.
